This is the day on which Bheeshmacharya did the dehatyaaga after being in the Shara Panjara for 56 days. As per Mahabharatha, Bhishmacharya was the son of Shantanu Maharaja born to Ganga. Bheeshmacharya had taken an oath not to marry for ever and he kept up his words for ever to ensure that the sons of Shantanu only be given the throne of Kuruvamsha. Bhishmacharya was rightly called as “Pitamaha”.

As he was the Pitamaha for all of us, it is with great respect that one has to give tarpana. On this day, even Jeevanpitru also has to give Jalatarpana to Bheeshmacharyaru. Tarpanadhikarigalu to use Tila(ellu). Pleased with the tarpana, it is said that Bheeshmaru will bless with putrasantanaadi phala.

He studied under from “Parashurama Devaru” and learnt all sorts of vidya. Nearly 500 years of his life, he dedicated for vidyarjana. He only did the Vishnu Sahasranama upadesha to Pandavaas. When he gave the upadesha, Krishna only sat in him and gave the upadesha in the mouth of Bheeshmacharya.

 As he was the pitamaha for all of us, it is with great respect that one has to give tarpana. On this day, even Jeevanpitru also has to give Jalatarpana to Bheeshmacharyaru. We have to give Tarpana to Bheeshmaru :

ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಷ್ಠಮೀ : ಈ ದಿನದಲ್ಲಿ ಭೀಷ್ಮರಿಗೆ ತರ್ಪಣವನ್ನು ಸರ್ವರೂ ಕೊಡಬೇಕು. ಈ ತರ್ಪಣವು ನಿತ್ಯ.

ಗಂಗಾಪುತ್ರಾಯ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ಆಜನ್ಮಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೇ |
ಅಪುತ್ರಾಯ ಜಲಂ ದದ್ಯಾಂ ನಮೋ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ವರ್ಮಣೇ |
ಭೀಷ್ಮಃ ಶಾಂತನವೋ ವೀರಃ ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಜಿತೇಂದ್ರಿಯಃ |
ಆಭೀರದ್ಭಿರವಾಪ್ನೋತು ಪುತ್ರಪೌತ್ರೋಚಿತಾಂ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ |
ವೈಯಾಘ್ರಪಾದಗೋತ್ರಾಯ ಸಾಂಕೃತ್ಯಪ್ರವರಾಯ ಚ |
ಅಪುತ್ರಾಯ ದದಾಮ್ಯೇತಜ್ಜಲಂ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ವರ್ಮಿಣೇ |
ವಸೂನಾಮವತಾರಾಯ ಶಂತನೋರಾತ್ಮಜಾಯ ಚ |   ತರ್ಪಣವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಆಚಮನ ಮಾಡಿ

ವಸೂನಾಮವತಾರಾಯ ಶಂತನೋರಾತ್ಮಜಾಯ ಚ |
ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ದದಾಮಿ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ಅಬಾಲಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೇ ||   ಎಂಬ ಮಂತ್ರದಿಂದ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೊಡಬೇಕು.

ಮೇಲ್ಕಂಡ ತರ್ಪಣವನ್ನು ತಂದೆಯಿದ್ದವರು ಅಕ್ಕಿ ಕಾಳಿನಿಂದ ಸವ್ಯ-ವಾಗಿಯೂ, ತಂದೆಯಿಲ್ಲದವರು ಎಳ್ಳಿನಿಂದ ಅಪಸವ್ಯ-ವಾಗಿಯೂ ಕೊಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಬಹುಮತವಾಗಿದೆ. ತಂದೆಯಿದ್ದವರು ಕೊಡಬಾರದೆಂದು ಕೆಲವರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದೇಶಾಚಾರದಂತೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು.

ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯ ಮಂತ್ರ

ವಸೂನಾಮವತಾರಾಯ ಶಂತನೋರಾತ್ಮಜಾಯ ಚ |
ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ದದಾಮಿ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ಅಬಾಲಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೇ ||

ಗಂಗಾಪುತ್ರಾಯ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ಆಜನ್ಮಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೇ |
ಅಪುತ್ರಾಯ ಜಲಂ ದದ್ಯಾಂ ನಮೋ ಭೀಷ್ಮಾಯ ವರ್ಮಣೇ |
ಭೀಷ್ಮಃ ಶಾಂತನವೋ ವೀರಃ ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಜಿತೇಂದ್ರಿಯಃ |
ಆಭೀರದ್ಭಿರವಾಪ್ನೋತು ಪುತ್ರಪೌತ್ರೋಚಿತಾಂ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ |

भीष्म अर्घ्य मंत्र

वसूनामवताराय शंतनोरात्मजाय च ।
अर्घ्यं ददामि भीष्माय अबालब्रह्मचारिणे ।।

गंगापुत्राय भीष्माय आजन्मब्रह्मचारिणे ।
अपुत्राय जलं दद्यां नमो भीष्माय वर्मणे ।
भीष्मः शांतनवो वीरः सत्यवादी जितेंद्रियः ।
आभीरद्भिरवाप्नोतु पुत्रपौत्रोचितां क्रियाम् ।
वैयाघ्रपादगोत्राय सांकृत्यप्रवराय च ।
अपुत्राय ददाम्येतज्जलं भीष्माय वर्मिणे ।
वसूनामवताराय शंतनोरात्मजाय च ।

భీష్మ అర్ఘ్య మంత్ర

వసూనామవతారాయ శంతనోరాత్మజాయ చ |
అర్ఘ్యం దదామి భీష్మాయ అబాలబ్రహ్మచారిణే ||

గంగాపుత్రాయ భీష్మాయ ఆజన్మబ్రహ్మచారిణే |
అపుత్రాయ జలం దద్యాం నమో భీష్మాయ వర్మణే |
భీష్మ: శాంతనవో వీర: సత్యవాదీ జితేంద్రియ: |
ఆభీరద్భిరవాప్నోతు పుత్రపౌత్రోచితాం క్రియామ్ |
వైయాఘ్రపాదగోత్రాయ సాంకృత్యప్రవరాయ చ |
అపుత్రాయ దదామ్యేతజ్జలం భీష్మాయ వర్మిణే |
వసూనామవతారాయ శంతనోరాత్మజాయ చ |

பீஷ்ம அர்க்ய மம்த்ர

வஸூநாமவதாராய ஶம்தநோராத்மஜாய ச |
அர்க்யம் ததாமி பீஷ்மாய அபாலப்ரஹ்மசாரிணே ||

கம்காபுத்ராய பீஷ்மாய ஆஜந்மப்ரஹ்மசாரிணே |
அபுத்ராய ஜலம் தத்யாம் நமோ பீஷ்மாய வர்மணே |
பீஷ்ம: ஶாம்தநவோ வீர: ஸத்யவாதீ ஜிதேம்த்ரிய: |
ஆபீரத்பிரவாப்நோது புத்ரபௌத்ரோசிதாம் க்ரியாம் |
வையாக்ரபாதகோத்ராய ஸாம்க்ருத்யப்ரவராய ச |
அபுத்ராய ததாம்யேதஜ்ஜலம் பீஷ்மாய வர்மிணே |
